What the assistant can do

Set by the server
  • server toolsReadsTools the server itself declares read only run without asking.
  • server toolsAsks firstEvery other tool the server exposes stops and asks.

What you hand over

  • URLWhere the server listens.
  • transportHTTP or SSE.
  • authenticationNone, a header, a bearer token or OAuth.

With OAuth the provider opens in a new tab. Tokens refresh a minute before they expire, and disconnecting deletes the stored authorization outright.

When it asks you

Read only is decided by the server's own declaration, never guessed. Anything not declared read only asks first.

How to connect

  1. 1

Open + in the composer, then Connectors, and choose Add MCP server.

  2. 2

Give it a URL, a transport and an authentication method. With OAuth, approve in the new tab, come back and press Verify connection.

  3. 3

The server's tools appear to the assistant under their own names and descriptions.

Connectors in the documentation(opens in a new tab)

Connect a service from the chat sidebar.

Switch it on in a thread and approve each write as it comes up. Disconnecting removes the access immediately.
